Configuration: Weighted Items

Explanation

A weighted barcode format embeds the item's specific weight directly into the barcode number, typically using EAN-13 or UPC-A standards, starting with a special prefix (like '2' or '20') to signal it's for weighted goods, followed by a product code (PLU) and then digits representing the actual price or weight (e.g., in grams or kilograms) with decimals, ending with a checksum. This allows scales to print unique, scannable labels for random-weight items (like meat or produce) that scanners read instantly, automatically applying the correct price at checkout.

Defining in Fueltorque

In Fueltorque, the weighted barcode uses the SKU number, with the SKU number starting with any of:

  • 02
  • 20
  • 21

followed by a four digit SKU number resulting in a six digit SKU number.

The PLU Item must have the Mass Required or Quantity Required fields selected.

The barcode generated by the scales then includes the price of the item. The Point of Sale derives the quantity from the price in the barcode.

Exporting To Scales

An import file can be generated at the Fueltorque host in the "Operating" menu, "Weigh Scales and Shelf Labels".
