QZ Tray installation and certificate
FuelTorque Web POS uses QZ Tray to send receipts and kitchen orders from the browser to printers installed in Windows. Complete both parts of this guide: install QZ Tray, and then install the FuelTorque public certificate.
You will need:
- A Windows account with administrator access.
- The receipt or kitchen printer installed in Windows.
- The printer's Windows name entered against the POS station device.
If the POS uses Firefox, install Firefox before installing QZ Tray. If Firefox was installed afterwards, reinstall QZ Tray so its local HTTPS support is registered correctly.
1. Download and install QZ Tray
- Open the official QZ Tray Windows download page.
- Download the Windows Intel version for a normal Intel or AMD computer. Select ARM64 only when Windows Settings → System → About identifies the computer as ARM-based.
- Run the downloaded QZ Tray installer.
- Approve the Windows administrator prompt.
- Accept the standard installation options and complete the installation.
- Start QZ Tray if it has not started automatically.
- Confirm that the QZ Tray icon is visible in the Windows notification area. It may be behind the Show hidden icons arrow.
2. Download the FuelTorque certificate files
Download both files into the same folder, such as the Windows Downloads folder:
Only the public certificate is provided. It is safe to install on a Web POS computer.
The expected SHA-256 certificate fingerprint is:
3E9228FDA006CC1B6A47BC64F46BCE311AE83FCE534BACBFC218296063148625
To verify the downloaded certificate, open PowerShell in its download folder and run:
Get-FileHash .\fueltorque-qz-root.crt -Algorithm SHA256
Do not continue if the displayed fingerprint is different.
3. Install the FuelTorque certificate
- Open the Windows Start menu and search for PowerShell.
- Right-click Windows PowerShell and select Run as administrator.
- Change to the folder containing the two downloaded files. For example:
cd $env:USERPROFILE\Downloads
- Run the installer with a one-time execution-policy bypass:
powershell.exe -NoProfile -ExecutionPolicy Bypass -File .\install-qz-trust.ps1 `
-CertificatePath .\fueltorque-qz-root.crt
The script:
- Checks that it is running with administrator rights.
- Checks that QZ Tray is installed.
- Verifies that the selected certificate is the FuelTorque QZ root.
- Closes QZ Tray.
- Backs up an existing
override.crt. - Installs the certificate as:
C:\Program Files\QZ Tray\override.crt
- Restarts QZ Tray.
The execution-policy option applies only to this command and does not permanently change the computer's PowerShell policy.
4. Manual certificate installation
Use this only if the PowerShell script cannot be run:
- Exit QZ Tray from its notification-area icon.
- Copy
fueltorque-qz-root.crt. - Paste it into
C:\Program Files\QZ Tray. - Rename the copied file to
override.crt. - Approve the Windows administrator prompt.
- Start QZ Tray again.
If override.crt already exists, rename the existing file to
override.crt.bak before copying the FuelTorque certificate.
5. Authorize and test Web POS printing
- Confirm QZ Tray is running.
- Open or refresh FuelTorque Web POS.
- Sign in and open the configured Web POS station.
- Print a receipt or kitchen order.
- If QZ Tray displays an authorization prompt, confirm it identifies the FuelTorque Web POS station.
- Select Allow and Remember this decision.
- Confirm the document prints on the configured Windows printer.
If no printer is found, check that:
- The printer appears as online in Windows.
- The printer name in the POS station device configuration exactly matches its Windows printer name.
- QZ Tray is running in the notification area.
C:\Program Files\QZ Tray\override.crtexists.
Security
Never install or distribute fueltorque-qz-root-key.pem. That is the private
certificate-authority key and must remain protected on the FuelTorque host.
If the FuelTorque root certificate is replaced, the replacement public certificate must be installed on every Web POS computer.
